The Palo Alto by Diane Turner

December 20, 2015 by Seb Frey

SS Palo Alto
The SS Palo Alto at Sea Trial, September 10 1920

The Palo Alto, a ship made of concrete, was originally built as a tanker for the war effort, but when the war ended she was still under construction, so, in time, she was hauled here from Oakland, moored at Seacliff Beach Pier on Monterey Bay, and turned into a party ship, all dressed up in frills and finery, a boat in drag. A party boat made of cement? Ludicrous, you might exclaim, and who would disagree, but by 1930, her decks took on a carnival atmosphere. She sported a dance floor, a honkytonk piano, a 50-foot swimming pool, and a café. Twinkling lights hung from the masts and along the railings, and, with every sea breeze, music echoed off the cliffs behind the pier and into the sparse neighborhoods of the thirties.

Today she languishes at the end of the pier, tethered by a few remaining strips of rusted metal cabling. In places, lower parts of her have dipped beneath the bay surface, her midsection cracked open, exposing her soft insides to all forms of sea life and the elements. Every year she slips a little lower into the silt bottom of the bay. The Forest Service has cordoned her off to those who, up until a few years ago, walked out onto her decks and felt small pieces of history under their feet. Now posted signs warn: Danger! Keep Out.

Today the pier is relegated to weekend fishermen and visitors who push their noses through the steel mesh separating it from the ship. They grip the heavy wire with sandy fingers and ask each other, in wonder, how a ship made of cement could possibly float, and they stare at the teeming mass of seabirds that now call the relic home. Pushy gulls, quarrelsome pelicans, long-necked cormorants, and fat seals jockey and squabble for territory. The ragged hole in the hull allows the gulls and smaller birds to dip in and out at will, as they banter with gangly pelicans struggling to take flight on limited deck space. They huddle together on every surface at the bow of the ship, cheek to jowl, and argue. It is almost a performance for the gawkers behind the fence only a few feet away.

Visitors in the summer months and locals year round – yes, locals like me, are drawn here by some strange magnetic pull – flock to the area to look and perhaps to dream of a seaworthy vessel made of stone carrying them to exotic and distant ports.

Time, however, has not been kind to her. After the dancing feet stopped and the piano quieted, she has been battered and slapped by storms and left to withstand whatever the weather throws at her. The sea bombards her with logs the size of boulders and debris from shipwrecks in unknown places. She looks tired and beat up, the paint stripped from her hull by stinging waves and with each changing tide. She looks to be the epitome of obsolescence. And yet…

Yet, if you watch long enough and hard enough and squint into the setting sun, you will see she provides all measure of birds a haven from storms, pelting rain, and obnoxious beachgoers, who scream and chase them. So, you see, she is far from obsolete, serving a grand and noble purpose even today and even as she inexorably returns to the ocean depths.

Capitola Junior Guards Registration

April 16, 2015 by Seb Frey

Capitola Junior Guards
Capitola Junior Guards

I’m a morning person – I’m usually up by 5 or 5:30 AM, sometimes even a bit earlier than that…and I don’t have to set an alarm to do it. But on Monday this week, I actually did set my alarm for 4:00 AM so I could get in line for the Capitola Junior Guards Registration at the Capitola Recreation office at Jade Street Park.

In case you haven’t heard, the Capitola Junior Guards is a program that gives instruction in the fundamentals of ocean water safety, first aid, lifesaving, fitness, and good sportsmanship. The program features open water swimming, paddle boarding, body surfing, surfing, mock rescues, beach & water games, calisthenics and work-outs. There are two sessions each summer, each lasting about a month, with classes every day, Monday through Friday.

Photo Gallery – Capitola Junior Guards Registration

When my alarm went off that morning, I tumbled out of bed and into my clothes, grabbed my keys and a light jacket, and headed out the door. I didn’t know what to expect – I figured I’d probably be one of a handful of people there when I showed up around 4:20 AM.

Imagine my surprise when I got there and found that I was already the 16th person in line at that time. Three people had actually spent the night, to make sure they got into the session they wanted to. It was fun to see that a half dozen friends of mine were already in line, too.

It turns out, that was no coincidence – my wife had talked with a bunch of other moms and they’d decided they wanted our kids to be in the afternoon “class” in the first session. There was some drama, though: there was a notice on the glass door of the Recreation office indicating that only ten spots were available for the class that we wanted.

Video – Capitola Junior Guards Registration Line

Almost everyone in line had a six year old kid, like my son, and they all wanted the first session afternoon class as well. There are two classes per age group per session, and the morning class was full even before registration day. This is because slots are given automatically (to those who want them) to children of families who have previously been registered for the Junior Guards.

As the hours wore by, the line got longer – a lot longer. Around 6:30 AM or so, someone from the Capitola Junior Lifeguards Parents Club brought over some great Peet’s coffee – that was a nice surprise! A little before 8:30 AM (when the Recreation office opened), someone came out and put numbered stickers on everyone, which identified their place in the queue. I’d say there were close to 150 people who got a numbered sticker before the doors even opened.  Happily, it turned out that they had mis-counted the number of available slots; 15 were available for the class my friends and I had wanted, and I was able to register my son successfully.

I have lived in Santa Cruz for over twenty years now, and I’ve been aware of the Junior Guards for much of that time. It’s a local institution, and you could really feel the sense of community which was I think shared by everyone standing in that line with me. I’m so happy that our son Aiden will get to be in a class with so many of his friends. Technically he won’t be a Junior Guard – he’ll be a Little Guard, which are kids aged 6 through 8. I’m looking forward to seeing him progress and grow over the years with the Capitola Junior Guards.

Santa Cruz Bansai Show 2015

March 27, 2015 by Seb Frey

Santa Cruz Bansai Kai
Santa Cruz Bansai Kai

I sat down this morning to talk with Ben Willis, a local Aptos resident who has a really interesting and apparently quite fun hobby: bansai trees. Ben is the vice president of the Santa Cruz Bansai Kai Club, and he loves his Bansai! We talked for a half hour or so, and I learned a ton of really interesting stuff about Bansai trees. It turns out, there’s quite a bit to know about this tradition which dates back more than a thousand years. Towards the end, we discussed the Santa Cruz Bansai Kai club, and the Santa Cruz Bansai Show 2015.

Santa Cruz Bansai Kai Show March 2015

The Santa Cruz Bansai Kai Bonsai Show is this weekend, March 28th and 29th from 10:00 AM until 5:00 PM, at the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, better known as the MAH. There will be a demonstration each day at 2:00 PM. The event features plant and tool sales, a raffle, refreshments, and much more. Tickets are just $5 each at the door, which also gets you entrance to the entire museum.

The Bansai Show has been running for 27 years, and it’s a great place to learn more about Bansai Trees, and perhaps start down the path of the Bansai enthusiast.

The Santa Cruz Bansai Club meets on the third Thursday of every month at the Live Oak Grange. In addition, the club meets every second Wednesday at the Aptos Grange for members-only “Wednesday Workshops.”

Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough

March 16, 2015 by Seb Frey

Sea Otter
Sea Otter in Elkhorn Slough goes Kayaking

Have you ever gone Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough? My wife and I drove down yesterday and spent a couple of hours out on the water. I had gone before – years and years ago, on a tour with some friends. This time, it was just the wife and I, paddling around and taking in the sights.

We saw a lot of seals, of course – but we were really there to see the sea otters. And we were not disappointed. Right at the dock where you get in the kayak, there was a sea otter who was sleeping in the seat of one of the kayaks – super cute! And just as soon we left the dock, we began to spot sea otters everywhere. We must have seen at least a couple of dozen of them, including what was probably a family of the, a group of five, just chilling. We even saw one sea otter as he was cracking a clam or something open with a rock – crack, crack, crack, crack! – over and over…you know that sea otters are one of the few animals that uses tools, right? It was cool to see.

But probably the cutest thing we saw was a mama sea otter and her little baby, floating by and apparently playing with each other. I only had my iPhone to take video, and we couldn’t get too close. But look at this video below – you can hear them “talking” to each other.

A Walk on the Beaches of Aptos

February 23, 2015 by Seb Frey

A Walk on the Beaches of Aptos
A Walk on the Beaches of Aptos

I’ve always enjoyed going on a nice walk, and Aptos is a wonderful place to go for a stroll. For those looking to seriously exert themselves, there’s always the lovely Forest of Nisene Marks State Park, which has miles and miles of hiking trails through this 10,000+ acre forested beauty. However, many folks instead choose to go for a walk on the beaches of Aptos.

There’s no shortage of great beaches for walking in Aptos. The other day, I wanted to go on a walk, and I thought I would start at New Brighton Beach, then make my way down to Pot Belly Beach, and then Seacliff Beach, before cruising up the Aptos Beach Gate path before eventually making my way back home.

Aside from just exercise, I had another objective. I wanted to go to a place I hadn’t been to in years – maybe a couple of decades, actually. Back in my college days, when I was living up on the bluff above the Cement Boat, my friends and I would go to the beach now and again to hang out. One of our favorite spots to go was this really cool ravine, which is at the southern end of Pot Belly Beach.

I thought it would be a great place to take my kids sometime. Since I hadn’t been in a while, I decided to take a moment to reconnoiter, since I was in the neighborhood. Back in the day, my friends and I would wander quite far up the ravine, but on this trip, the creek was so high that getting up into the ravine would have involved getting wetter than I was planning on.

So I didn’t make it up the ravine, alas, but I took a few pictures and I’ve made a note to come back soon, with the kids. As I was standing there looking at my phone, I happened to notice that the ravine is actually the end of Borregas Creek Gulch – which, coincidentally, was also the original border of Aptos Rancho, back in the 1840s. Small world!

The ravine itself is very cool, with sandstone cliff walls climbing dozens of feet above the creek bed. It’s really cool to look at all the sea shells embedded into the walls of the ravine, and I can’t wait to go back with my kids to explore and talk about our local Aptos geology.

Starting 2015 On the Right Foot in Aptos

December 31, 2014 by Seb Frey

Happy New Year 2015
Planning to make 2015 a very Happy New Year

I’ve been working on Aptos Community News for over a year now, in part because I want to help make Aptos an even better place tomorrow than it is today. And in that spirit, I plan on starting 2015 on the right foot in Aptos. I’m going to improve our community starting with me, which is the only thing I am 100% in control of.

The good news is, I won’t be alone in this. Thousands of folks in the community are looking back on 2014, and looking forward to 2015 and thinking about what they can do better in the new year. I have a very long list of ways that I can personally improve, but as I get older, one thing that becomes increasingly important is maintaining my health.

And that’s why my eyes opened wider when I saw that the good folks at Fleet Feet Sports in Aptos are organizing Tons of Fun 2015, which is a community-based health and weight loss challenge. When striving towards any goal, it’s often more effective not to go it alone, and to at least have some kind of accountability partner…and maybe meet some like-minded, health-conscious Aptosians to boot.

I spoke with Tina Coillot who is one of the owners of Fleet Feet Sports, and put up a recording of our conversation on the Real Santa Cruz Podcasat. You can listen to the interview here:

Interview with Tina Coillot of Fleet Feet Sports

  • The Real Santa Cruz Podcast on Stitcher Radio
  • The Real Santa Cruz Podcast on iTunes
  • Download audio file…

It’s refreshing to talk to someone who truly has a passion for what they do – and I think you can really get a sense of that from my interview with Tina. I get the feeling that she really enjoys being part of our community and making the folks who live here healthier – and happier.

The interview is around 40 minutes long, so you might want to just subscribe to the podcast via iTunes or Stitcher and listen to it in your car, on your morning walk, at the gym, or whatever.

In the interview, we also talked about their “Couch to 5K” program – which I hadn’t heard about before we started talking. It sounds like just the ticket for me – someone who has never, ever ran (since high school anyway, and then only barely). I would love to be able to run a whole five thousand meters – so this is something I’m going to sign up for as well. In for a penny, in for a pound!

Happy New Year, Aptos! I love you. See you in 2015!

Christmas in Aptos

December 24, 2014 by Seb Frey

Christmas in Aptos
Christmas in Aptos is Sweet for Many Reasons

Nobody’s dreaming of a white Christmas in Aptos, and with good reason! Yesterday it was 69 degrees in Aptos, two days before Christmas, with sunny blue skies. In fact, it was downright balmy last evening when I stepped into the back yard to pick a couple of those small red Asian chilis I have growing out in the raised beds I built this summer.

A couple of days ago, my sister Amy and her family arrived from Boise, and I wanted the chilis for the vegan Thai pumpkin curry I made last night. We had spent Thanksgiving with my sister’s family in their cabin in Idaho City, and that was loads of fun. Now they’re here for Christmas in Aptos, and it’s great to have a house full of happy kids screaming, shouting, and crying over toys that don’t want to be shared.

Yesterday I spent an hour with my kids walking around our neighborhood dropping off Christmas sugar cookies we’d baked that day. My son Evan, the 3-year old, was so excited, he walked right up to every door with a bag of cookies in his hand and knocked determinedly with his little fist. When the door opened, he would thrust the bag of cookies forward and say “Merry Christmas!” with genuine enthusiasm – it was so cute to see, especially because Evan can be pretty shy around strangers.

One fun thing we did this holiday season was help organize and participate in the Cash Mob at Le Chef Kitchenware in Aptos. We could only stay about 20 minutes, and in that time a few folks from our community came to do some shopping with us…I’m not sure it actually turned into a mob, but every little bit helps. I look forward to doing another Cash Mob with the folks of Aptosia soon.

We could only stay for those twenty minutes because we had to run over to Los Gatos and hop aboard the Holiday Lights Tour bus. We met some cool folks (Scott and Lydia) on our son’s Aptos Soccer team this year, and their family owns West Valley Trailways in San Jose. It was a great tour on a super-comfy bus, and they had pizza, cookies, and hot chocolate for everyone. We sang Christmas carols as we rolled along, oohing and ahhing at the lights in Vasona Park and in a variety of Silicon Valley neighborhoods. Check out this video I took of one particularly awesome display:

We didn’t send out any Christmas cards this year, because this year, I thought I’d try something new. I’m going to call everyone on our Christmas list and wish them a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I started a couple of days ago, and clearly I’m not going to be able to reach everyone before Christmas, so a lot of folks are only going to get a heartfelt wish for a Happy New Year. It’s been great talking to so many people already – it’s really so much warmer and more engaging than a Christmas card, I think I’ll do it again next year.

If you haven’t received a call from me yet – it could be because I don’t have your phone number! If you suspect that might be the case, we’d welcome a call from you! Please call to say hi, you can reach us at 831-704-6873.

And if for whatever reason we don’t speak by phone or in person this Christmas, I want to wish you and everyone you love a wonderful holiday season, and all the best in the coming year. After all these difficult years just gone by, it is my sincere hope that 2015 will bring peace and prosperity to all, in Aptos and far beyond.

Seb Frey Circa 1974

November 20, 2014 by Seb Frey

Ahh, the 1970’s. So much was happening:  the Vietnam war, Richard Nixon’s impeachment, the Arab oil embargo, Jimmy Carter.  The Grateful Dead were arguably at the top of their game (Cornell ’77 anyone?). Loud clothing was all the rage.

I was oblivious to most of this at the time, except the loud clothing. Thanks to my parents, I totally rocked that.

Here’s a picture of me, Seb Frey circa 1974, age three. Amazingly enough, this is NOT an instagram picture – this is a genuine 1974 photograph (or an unretouched scan of it, anyway)! It was taken at my family’s home on Coates Drive in Seacliff:

Seb Frey, Circa 1974
Picture of me at the family home on Coates Drive in Seacliff, February 1974

You can’t actually see the home, as I’m standing in front of what amounts to a fenced-in patio at the “rear” of the property (the front was considered to be the bluff-side, with the “million dollar” Seacliff Beach and Monterey Bay view). The house was built by my grandfather between 1948 and 1951, as a kind of weekend project. I ended up living in it for many years – college years, and after – but we won’t be seeing too many photos of those times. 🙂

My brother, sister and I bought it from our family and held onto it for I think about 10 years or so, but eventually sold it back in 2008. Sigh. I still spend a lot of time in Seacliff, as today, we live only about a mile away as the crow flies.  Some things change, some things don’t, but one thing is for sure:  my kids are considerably better dressed than I was back in the day.

Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Grand Opening

November 19, 2014 by Seb Frey

I attended the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on November 15 2014. I shot some video of both the ribbon cutting and a variety of the exhibits…which you could hardly see, because there were so many people there. In fact, they counted over 2,000 people through the doors on launch day!

Here on this page you will find two separate videos – the first is sort of a montage of the opening day, taking you on a tour of the museum as it was on launch day.

Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Opening Day Montage

The second video is the ribbon cutting ceremony, with remarks from Patrice Keet, the museum’s founder, as well as Sam Storey, the Mayor of Capitola.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The museum is off to a great start, and it has already become the new hot spot in town for kid’s birthday parties, with dozens already scheduled within the next several months. Hundreds of people have now also purchased memberships to the museum as well.

Even though the museum is off to an amazing start, it’s still very much version 1.0. The museum is in need of donations: cash, materials for new exhibits, and skilled help to run and augment the museum. I you can volunteer money, equipment, or skills, please get in touch with the museum staff to let them know what you can offer.
