Have you ever gone Kayaking in Elkhorn Slough? My wife and I drove down yesterday and spent a couple of hours out on the water. I had gone before – years and years ago, on a tour with some friends. This time, it was just the wife and I, paddling around and taking in the sights.
We saw a lot of seals, of course – but we were really there to see the sea otters. And we were not disappointed. Right at the dock where you get in the kayak, there was a sea otter who was sleeping in the seat of one of the kayaks – super cute! And just as soon we left the dock, we began to spot sea otters everywhere. We must have seen at least a couple of dozen of them, including what was probably a family of the, a group of five, just chilling. We even saw one sea otter as he was cracking a clam or something open with a rock – crack, crack, crack, crack! – over and over…you know that sea otters are one of the few animals that uses tools, right? It was cool to see.
But probably the cutest thing we saw was a mama sea otter and her little baby, floating by and apparently playing with each other. I only had my iPhone to take video, and we couldn’t get too close. But look at this video below – you can hear them “talking” to each other.
