Beach and Creek Cleanups: June 14, July 5

June 9, 2014 by Seb Frey

Two community clean ups have been planned, one for Aptos Creek and one for Hidden Beach. The Aptos Creek Cleanup is set for Saturday, June 14 and another set for Saturday, July 5th at Hidden Beach. Both cleanups are being done in conjunction with Save Our Shores.

The Aptos Creek Cleanup on June 14th will be meeting at Aptos Village Park at 9 AM. Be sure to wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. There’s a write-up on this site about a previous Aptos Creek cleanup to get an idea of what the experience is like.

The Hidden Beach cleanup is being organized by the Rio Del Mar Improvement Association. The group will be meeting at Hidden Beach Park at 8 AM before heading down to the beach. This is a particularly important time to clean up the beach as the July 4th festivities usually leave the beach looking quite a bit worse for the wear.

Aptos History Museum Fundraiser, August 8 2014

June 4, 2014 by Seb Frey

The Aptos History Museum is putting on its annual fundraiser this August 8th at the Seascape Sports Club. The theme this year is “Hula For History” and is being held in conjunction with the Comerica Bank Challenger tennis tournament quarter finals.

Tickets are $30 in advance, or $40 at the door – and either price represents an amazing value, as it includes food from a number of local restaurants, fine wine and beer, and live Hawaiian music and entertainment. Not only that, a ticket to the fundraiser also gets you in to watch the tennis tournament with world-ranked players.

There’s also a silent auction and a craft fair with local vendors. Guests are encouraged to wear Hawaiian clothing or tennis garb – but what’s more important is that they just show up to support the Aptos History Museum! This is the museum’s major fundraiser of the year and it’s a great way to support it, see some world class tennis, and enjoy a smorgasbord of food, wine, beer, and Hawaiian culture.

Call 831-688-1467 for more info or to buy tickets. Or do you want FREE tickets? Then enter our contest to win a free pair of tickets!

Sheriff Candidates Forum, May 13 2014

May 8, 2014 by Seb Frey

The Seacliff Improvement Association is hosting a forum for the candidates vying to become the next Santa Cruz County Sheriff. One of the missions of the Seacliff Improvement Association is to work with elected officials to improve our community. To foster this, they are hosting a candidate forum because, in June, residents will vote for a new county sheriff. All three candidates have accepted their invitation to join them up on the terrace of the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz, across from Rancho Del Mar Center.

Candidates will share their views on law enforcement and answer pre-selected questions from our moderator (submitted by our members). If you have a question for the candidates, please bring it along so you can ask the candidates during refreshments/mixer. The forum is to be held on Tuesday, May 13 at 7 PM.

They need to know if you plan to attend so we can save you some tasty snacks and a seat. Seating is limited so please RSVP this week by email to info@seacliffimprovement.org by Monday, May 12th.

If you have yet to visit the terrace at the Community Foundation of Santa Cruz, you can reach it from outside stairs on both sides of the building. Just look for the signs. Parking is limited so remember to carpool.

Mother’s Day is right around the corner, and for the 38th year in a row, the Cabrillo College horticulture department is having it’s annual Mother’s Day Plant Sale. Each year, they sell a huge selection of plants, flowers, culinary and medicinal herbs, succulents, vines, vegetable starts – you name it, they got it! This year they have over 1,000 varieties to choose from.

All of the plants being sold were grown by Cabrillo students, with proceeds from the sale going to fund the Environmental Horticulture Facility for the upcoming school year.

The “presale” begins on Friday, May 9 from 3 to 7 PM, and you must donate $25 to get in on the presale. On Saturday May 10, hours are from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and Sunday from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM.

While you’re there, check out their state-of-the-art facilities including the greenhouse complex, shadehouses, lab classroom, horticulture learning center, and community room.
