January 14, 2016 by Seb Frey

Art Thomae is putting the finishing touches on the beautiful mural. #aptos #art #mural

Renown Santa Cruz mural artist Arturo Thomae has announced that he’ll be painting another of his iconic murals to grace the southern trestle wall, just outside Aptos Village. This past summer, Mr. Thomae completed a mural at the northern trestle which has been well received by the community. Notably, six months on, his work has not been marred by graffiti. Funds are being raised for the project, with a goal of $18,500.

Potential donors are encouraged to contact Mary Russell through the Aptos Chamber. Mary can be reached at 831-566-8836 or via email at mer4000@aol.com. If anyone is interested in having Mary come to their group to make a presentation on the project, she’s happy to do so as well.

Coffee, Tee, and History: F.A. Hihn

January 7, 2016 by Seb Frey

F.A. Hihn

Francis Augustus (“F.A.”) Hihn

The Aptos History Museum is putting on event called “Coffee, Tea and History” about F.A. Hihn, one of the “founding fathers” as it were of Aptos and Santa Cruz. Hihn was Santa Cruz’s first self made millionaire. Among his many accomplishments, he built and ran the first Santa Cruz Railroad, and created the town of Valencia to support his lumber operations in Aptos Village.

The talk will be given by Stan Stevens, author of numerous books, papers, and articles about Hihn. The event will be held on Saturday, January 16th from 3:30 PM until 5:00 PM, and will be held at the Rio Sands Hotel. There’s a $15 entrance fee, which will go to support the Museum. This is sure to be a fun and very interesting presentation for anyone interested in the history of Aptos and Santa Cruz.

Seating is very limited – to grab your seat, call the Aptos Chamber at 831-688-1467 to reserve yours today!

A New Year, a New Kitten in Aptos

January 5, 2016 by Seb Frey

Happy New Year everyone! As I’ve mentioned before, I really love a new year. Already, I feel like the year is off to a good start – I know the freakish weather on the east coast and in Europe is a concern, but finally, we have rain in California. The local economy feels much improved from a year ago, so who cares what the Chinese stock market did today?

Kitten
Click Bait Kitty

Our family started the year off in a big way, by welcoming a new addition, right on January 1st: a beautiful two-ish month old tabby cat, tentatively named Sparky. Our kids have wanted a pet for…well for years now, probably. They’re head over heels in love with him! We got him thanks to Melissa, a friend of ours who works with Heading Home Animal Rescue (you can also find them on Facebook). If you’re looking for a new dog or cat to join the household, check there first!

Despite an auspicious beginning for some of us, there’s no shortage of reasons to be pessimistic about the future, given the state of things today. But the world’s always going to have horrific events like what’s recently happened in Paris, San Bernadino, and pretty much all of Iraq, Syria, Afghanistan, and Libya. Bad things are going to happen. I grew up terrified of a nuclear winter; now we’re terrified of climate change, and who knows what our kids will have to worry about.

A Boy and his Cat
This Is Love!

But thankfully, most of this feels a world away. Here in Aptos, the economy is doing well, the rain is pattering on my roof, and California’s crime rate is at a 47 year low. Our kids are healthy and happy – the new kitten is an additional joy in our lives. We are truly blessed, and we are looking forward to a beautiful 2016 with our friends, family, and our community at large.

We hope all of you have a happy, healthy, and prosperous 2016!

The Palo Alto by Diane Turner

December 20, 2015 by Seb Frey

SS Palo Alto
The SS Palo Alto at Sea Trial, September 10 1920

The Palo Alto, a ship made of concrete, was originally built as a tanker for the war effort, but when the war ended she was still under construction, so, in time, she was hauled here from Oakland, moored at Seacliff Beach Pier on Monterey Bay, and turned into a party ship, all dressed up in frills and finery, a boat in drag. A party boat made of cement? Ludicrous, you might exclaim, and who would disagree, but by 1930, her decks took on a carnival atmosphere. She sported a dance floor, a honkytonk piano, a 50-foot swimming pool, and a café. Twinkling lights hung from the masts and along the railings, and, with every sea breeze, music echoed off the cliffs behind the pier and into the sparse neighborhoods of the thirties.

Today she languishes at the end of the pier, tethered by a few remaining strips of rusted metal cabling. In places, lower parts of her have dipped beneath the bay surface, her midsection cracked open, exposing her soft insides to all forms of sea life and the elements. Every year she slips a little lower into the silt bottom of the bay. The Forest Service has cordoned her off to those who, up until a few years ago, walked out onto her decks and felt small pieces of history under their feet. Now posted signs warn: Danger! Keep Out.

Today the pier is relegated to weekend fishermen and visitors who push their noses through the steel mesh separating it from the ship. They grip the heavy wire with sandy fingers and ask each other, in wonder, how a ship made of cement could possibly float, and they stare at the teeming mass of seabirds that now call the relic home. Pushy gulls, quarrelsome pelicans, long-necked cormorants, and fat seals jockey and squabble for territory. The ragged hole in the hull allows the gulls and smaller birds to dip in and out at will, as they banter with gangly pelicans struggling to take flight on limited deck space. They huddle together on every surface at the bow of the ship, cheek to jowl, and argue. It is almost a performance for the gawkers behind the fence only a few feet away.

Visitors in the summer months and locals year round – yes, locals like me, are drawn here by some strange magnetic pull – flock to the area to look and perhaps to dream of a seaworthy vessel made of stone carrying them to exotic and distant ports.

Time, however, has not been kind to her. After the dancing feet stopped and the piano quieted, she has been battered and slapped by storms and left to withstand whatever the weather throws at her. The sea bombards her with logs the size of boulders and debris from shipwrecks in unknown places. She looks tired and beat up, the paint stripped from her hull by stinging waves and with each changing tide. She looks to be the epitome of obsolescence. And yet…

Yet, if you watch long enough and hard enough and squint into the setting sun, you will see she provides all measure of birds a haven from storms, pelting rain, and obnoxious beachgoers, who scream and chase them. So, you see, she is far from obsolete, serving a grand and noble purpose even today and even as she inexorably returns to the ocean depths.

Aptos Real Estate Update December 2015

December 16, 2015 by Seb Frey

The cold and damp have at long last returned to Aptos! After a lovely warm and relatively fog-free summer and fall, Aptos is seeing its first “real” winter in many moons. But what effect is the chilly and wet weather having on the Aptos real estate market? Find out in the Aptos Real Estate Update December 2015!

December 2015 Aptos Real Estate Update

The median price for single family homes in Aptos in November 2015 was $887,450 – which is up about 12.2% from a year ago (when the median price was $791,000). This is also up 7.4% from the month prior, when the median price in May was $772,500.

There were 24 sales of single family homes in November 2015, and that’s a healthy increase of 41.1% compared to a year ago. These 24 homes sold in an average of just 63 days on market – considerably longer than it took for homes to sell earlier in the year, when homes were typically on the market for about 30 days on average. A year ago at this time, it took 31 days on average to sell a single family home in Aptos.

Want the Best Price for your Aptos Home?

webinar2
Why gamble on getting the best price and terms possible when selling your house? Want something more like a sure bet? Then check out this 20 minute webinar on how to sell your home quickly, for the highest price, and with the least hassle, uncertainty, and risk. This is a No BS Webinar on how to Sell your Home – it’s short and to the point, and well worth a few minutes of your time.

Not only that – sellers received on average 97.3% of full asking price for their homes – considerably less than we’d seen earlier in the year, when the average sale-to-list-price ratio often exceeded 100%. A year ago at this time, however, sellers were receiving only 95.3% of full asking price.

At the time of this report, there were 74 single family homes for sale in Aptos, and of those, 36 were under contract to be sold. That works out to be a 1.5 month supply of inventory; that is an extremely low level of inventory for Aptos! With just 38 single family homes available for purchase in all of Aptos, it’s very, very much a seller’s market as we head deeper into winter.

Let’s turn out attention to the market for condos and townhomes. The median price for condos and townhomes was $750,000 in November 2015. That is a meteoric rise of 54.6% compared to a year ago, when the median condo price was just $485,000. However, this past November there several sales of full-ocean-view condos that skewed the numbers higher than last year. However, the median condo price was up 14.7% compared to this past October, when the median condo price was $654,000.

There were a total of 7 condo and townhouse sales in November, which is an increase in volume of 133% compared to a year ago, when just 3 condos and townhouses sold at this time.

The condos which sold did so in an average of 21 days on market – a big improvement compared to a year ago, when condos took 91 days to sell on average for closings in November 2014.

At the time of this report, there were 22 condos and townhouses for sale in Aptos, but 8 of those are presently under contract to be sold, leaving just 14 units available for purchase. This works out to be a paltry 78 days – less than three months! – of condo inventory in Aptos. It’s very much a seller’s market for condos as well as single family homes in Aptos.

When she befriends young Corrine Dunning, who is feeling paranoid about her boyfriend’s past, Mary senses it is the entity from the ship that is trying to make a home in Corrine’s mind. Mary knows that a ghost that haunts the human mind is the most terrifying of all.
