Friends of the Aptos Library Seek Community Support

December 6, 2014 by Seb Frey

Aptos Public Library
Aptos Public Library

There’s a new Aptos chapter of the Friends of the Santa Cruz Public Libraries. The new group, Friends of the Aptos Library, advocates for the Aptos library and supports children’s literacy programs, book and media purchases, concerts, author talks, community reading programs, technical and facilities upgrades, and more. The new chapter joins four existing chapters in Boulder Creek, Felton, La Selva Beach and Scotts Valley.

The Friends of Aptos Library chapter first met in October and has met twice more since then, with over 30 people expressing interest in working with the group. The chapter formed in response to the need to provide additional support for the Aptos branch, which is one of the most-used libraries in Santa Cruz county.

Annette D’Adamo, the first board president for Friends of the Aptos Library and a 20-year Seacliff resident, is quoted as saying:

We’re interested in learning more about the needs of our community, which will influence what the vision is for Friends of Aptos Library.

Annette sat down at the Aptos Library for a brief interview, to talk about the new group, and how the community can get involved. A recording of the interview is available here:

In the interview, a number of topics were addressed, including the bond measure on the ballot for 2015 to update, enhance, and modernize a number of libraries in the Santa Cruz system, including especially the Aptos branch.

If you are interested in joining the Friends of the Aptos Library (they’re looking for board members), volunteering, advocating for the bond measure, or in making a donation, please contact them via email at friendsoftheaptoslibrary@gmail.com. The group normally meets the first Thursday of every month at 7:00 PM in the community room at the Aptos Public Library. The next meeting of the group though is the 2nd Thursday of January, because the 1st is New Year’s Day. If you’re interested, please come to the meeting on January 8th 2015 at the Aptos Library.

Free Family Movie Matinee at the Aptos Public Library

December 5, 2014 by Seb Frey

Aptos Library Movie Maintee
First Friday Movie Matinee at the Aptos Public Library

Did you know that there is a free family movie matinee at the Aptos Public Library? Yep, it’s true: the free matinee is held the first Friday of every month in the community meeting room, just to the right as you come in the front door. This month the movie is held today, December 5 at 3:00 PM, and they are showing Chicken Little.

This month, they are also having a special showing of the Muppet Christmas Carol. This will be in two weeks, on Friday, December 19. Don’t worry about not finding space – the meeting room holds nearly 70 people, and a good turnout at the movie would be about 20 folks in attendance. Here’s a great chance to get out of your house and watch a movie with your kids and friends from the Aptos community.

Best Santa Cruz Christmas Tree Lot is in Aptos

November 30, 2014 by Seb Frey

It turns out that the best Santa Cruz Christmas tree lot is in Aptos! This may be somewhat of a subjective statement, but what other Christmas tree lot in the county gives you free popcorn, hot cocoa, coffee, and hot apple cider? What other Christmas tree lot in town has a special crafts area for your kids to make holiday decorations while you shop for a Christmas tree?

They offer a full range of top notch Christmas trees, and they are all fresh and grown in the U.S.A. And the prices are reasonable, too – very competitive with Costco and other lots around town. If you’re shopping for a fresh live Christmas tree this year, go and check out the Christmas tree lot in Aptos Village – you’ll be glad you did! They accept cash, checks, and Visa/Mastercard.

The Aptos Christmas Tree Lot is located where Lucy’s Hot Dog stand is, which is next to Testorff Construction, which in turn is located right next to the Bayview Hotel.

Seb Frey Circa 1974

November 20, 2014 by Seb Frey

Ahh, the 1970’s. So much was happening:  the Vietnam war, Richard Nixon’s impeachment, the Arab oil embargo, Jimmy Carter.  The Grateful Dead were arguably at the top of their game (Cornell ’77 anyone?). Loud clothing was all the rage.

I was oblivious to most of this at the time, except the loud clothing. Thanks to my parents, I totally rocked that.

Here’s a picture of me, Seb Frey circa 1974, age three. Amazingly enough, this is NOT an instagram picture – this is a genuine 1974 photograph (or an unretouched scan of it, anyway)! It was taken at my family’s home on Coates Drive in Seacliff:

Seb Frey, Circa 1974
Picture of me at the family home on Coates Drive in Seacliff, February 1974

You can’t actually see the home, as I’m standing in front of what amounts to a fenced-in patio at the “rear” of the property (the front was considered to be the bluff-side, with the “million dollar” Seacliff Beach and Monterey Bay view). The house was built by my grandfather between 1948 and 1951, as a kind of weekend project. I ended up living in it for many years – college years, and after – but we won’t be seeing too many photos of those times. 🙂

My brother, sister and I bought it from our family and held onto it for I think about 10 years or so, but eventually sold it back in 2008. Sigh. I still spend a lot of time in Seacliff, as today, we live only about a mile away as the crow flies.  Some things change, some things don’t, but one thing is for sure:  my kids are considerably better dressed than I was back in the day.

Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Grand Opening

November 19, 2014 by Seb Frey

I attended the Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Grand Opening and Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on November 15 2014. I shot some video of both the ribbon cutting and a variety of the exhibits…which you could hardly see, because there were so many people there. In fact, they counted over 2,000 people through the doors on launch day!

Here on this page you will find two separate videos – the first is sort of a montage of the opening day, taking you on a tour of the museum as it was on launch day.

Santa Cruz Children’s Museum of Discovery Opening Day Montage

The second video is the ribbon cutting ceremony, with remarks from Patrice Keet, the museum’s founder, as well as Sam Storey, the Mayor of Capitola.

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony

The museum is off to a great start, and it has already become the new hot spot in town for kid’s birthday parties, with dozens already scheduled within the next several months. Hundreds of people have now also purchased memberships to the museum as well.

Even though the museum is off to an amazing start, it’s still very much version 1.0. The museum is in need of donations: cash, materials for new exhibits, and skilled help to run and augment the museum. I you can volunteer money, equipment, or skills, please get in touch with the museum staff to let them know what you can offer.

Aptos Real Estate Market Update for November 2014

November 17, 2014 by Seb Frey

It seems like just last week that dawn broke on the new year of 2014, but now we’re already staring at Thanksgiving, right around the corner. And you know what that means: it’s time for the Aptos Real Estate Market Update for November 2014.

Last month we reported that the median home price in Aptos had taken quite a tumble, down 16.8% from a year ago. What a difference 30 days makes! The median price for Aptos single-family homes in October 2014 was $774,000 – an increase of 5.7% compared to a year ago, and up 16.3% compared to the month before. Phew!

Not only did the home price bump up, sales volume came in higher than normal, with 25 single-family homes having sold in Aptos in October. That’s a 19% increase compared to a year ago, and also a month ago, when 21 homes were sold in both of those periods. The sales-to-list-price ratio remains unchanged: sellers got 98.4% of asking price last month, same as a year ago.

Homes sold quickly in Aptos last month, in an average of just 39 days – that’s 51% faster than a year ago, and 20% faster than the county average of 49 days for sold homes in October 2014.

You may recall that last month I reported a jump in inventory in Aptos – however, inventory has dropped since then. At this time, there are 103 homes listed for sale in all of Aptos, and of those, 28 are under contract. That works out to just about a four month supply of homes – still, a very good seller’s market.

Want the Best Price for your Aptos Home?

Why gamble on getting the best price and terms possible when selling your house? Want something more like a sure bet? Then you need to check out the SellForSure Home Sale System. A guaranteed, proven system for selling your home for the highest price, in the shortest time possible, with the least amount of hassle, uncertainty, and risk.

Just five condos/townhouses closed escrow in October, with a median price of $589,000. That’s a 80% increase over a year ago, when the median price was $327,500. Of course, given how few condos sold last month, it’s not a useful measurement of the comparative strength of condo prices last month compared to a year ago, but it’s good link-bait.

Condos sold in an average of 79 days, a bit quicker than a year ago when they sold in 81 days. Condo sellers did pretty well too in that they received 97% of asking price for their homes, compared to just 92.1% a year ago.

There are presently 30 condos and townhouses on the market, and of those, 7 are under contract with 23 available. That works out to about a 5 month supply of condos and townhouses. Remember, many of those units (11, actually) are in the Seascape Resort, which is kind of a market unto itself.

Legalization Assistance Permit Program Meeting on November 17

November 13, 2014 by Seb Frey

Santa Cruz County is holding a public Legalization Assistance Permit Program meeting on November 17 at the Episcopal Church of St. John the Baptist in Seacliff. The meeting will be held from 7:00 PM until 9:00 PM in the church’s cafe facility.

The Legalization Assistance Permit Program (LAPP) is designed to help property owners with unpermitted improvements (i.e. bedroom or bathroom additions, accessory units) bring them into legal compliance.

According to the county,

The program will apply to single family and multiple-family dwellings, commercial, industrial and agricultural structures which were altered, remodeled or constructed without required permits.

The LAPP program began on August 24, 2014 and will run only for a two-year period. Property owners who come forward to legalize unpermitted construction during this time will not be charged the “recover enforcement costs” fee but will have to pay regular permit fees, development impact fees, and possibly back taxes as well, and all improvements must comply with building, zoning, and environmental standards.  The full LAPP program guidelines can be read here.
