This morning at approximately 5:23 AM, a 4.7 Magnitude Earthquake rattled Aptos. The quake originated in Greenfield, about 65 miles southeast of Aptos, at a depth of 9 kilometers. The quake could be felt throughout the central coast, including in Salinas, Watsonville, and Monterey. No damage has been reported.
According to Earthquaketrack.com, Aptos has experienced 6 earthquakes in the past 7 days, 43 in the past month, and 559 in the past year. Aptos just recently past the 25-year anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta Earthquake, which did cause major damage to Aptos, Santa Cruz, and throughout northern California.
Although today’s earthquake did no damage, it is a good reminder to us all that we do live in earthquake country, and residents should be prepared for a major seismic event.
Update @ 7:02 AM: the strength of the quake has also been reported as 4.4 Magnitude
