The Santa Cruz Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) has just announced a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the long-awaited Mar Vista Overcrossing! This is but one step on the journey towards a completed pedestrian bridge. The RFP is not for the actual construction of the bridge, but rather for the design work which will be required:
1. Phase 1 – Design Development and Caltrans Project Approval and Environmental Documentation (PA&ED)
2. Phase 2 – Final Design Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E)
3. Phase 3 – Bidding and Construction Support
According to the RFP, the entire project is slated to cost $5.2 million and is currently programmed for fiscal year 2019/2020, but that the RTC and Santa Cruz county are interested in delivering this project at the earliest possible time.
Supervisor Zach Friend, who represents Aptos on the County Board of Supervisors, had this to say:
Mar Vista Drive was split with construction of the highway and this will finally reunite both sides, providing safe bike and pedestrian access. Currently, students wanting to walk to school from Seacliff have to travel over a mile and brave crossings that aren’t ideal. This bridge will fix that and may help reduce the amount of morning traffic on State Park and Soquel associated with school dropoff times. It’s been promised to the community for quite some time and I’m pleased the first significant step toward it becoming reality is underway.
