The Santa Cruz Sentinel recently ran a story about Piet deVires, an Aptos resident who has been living and working in Liberia. He initially visited the country in March 2013 with his wife to lead water, sanitation, and hygiene improvements. All that changed with the outbreak of the Ebola virus a year later. The Sentinel article goes into good detail about his work there, and is worth a read.
Liberia is a world away from bucolic Aptos, and it’s easy not to think about Ebola and much of the world’s woes. Nevertheless, a lot of people in Aptos do think and care about it a great deal, and Piet deVries does much more than that. Mr. deVries is emblematic of the kind of folks who call Aptos home, and we’re proud to learn of his tremendous generosity.
