Soon CAL FIRE (the Department of Forestry and Fire Protection), the California state agency charged with preventing and combatting fires in California, will begin making inspections of at-risk homes in California, to ensure that they have the legally mandated 100 feet of “defensible space” around homes.
According to a report by KION TV, one Aptos neighborhood isn’t waiting for CAL FIRE to come. The neighborhood in question is up Redwood Drive, and is in the heavily forested hills adjacent to Nisene Marks State Park. Residents there have already begun to remove brush, fallen trees, and dry wood around their homes to make increase the odds of saving their homes should a fire break out.
This year is likely to be one of extremely high risk for wild fires, due to the very dry winter we’ve had. Thousands of Aptos residents live in forested neighborhoods, and they owe it to themselves to spend some time this spring preparing for what could be a long, hot summer. CAL FIRE has a web site that gives instructions on how to create a good, defensible space around your home.
